Shackletons is ideally situated for the most wonderful bird watching holiday Africa can provide to its visitors. Nearly 300 species of both indigenous and migrating birds can be spotted in this area.

The Upper Zambezi River around Shackletons provides a wide variety of bird habitats that include: sandy river banks; reed beds, water lilies, low overhanging vegetation, riverine forest, flooded grasslands, lakes, vleis, and woodlands.

Enjoy the abundant bird life around the Lodge or on a boat safari along the riverbanks or on a mokorro into the channels of the tranquil Upper Zambezi River.

African Skimmers in flocks of hundreds, Carmine bee-eater, White Fronted bee-eater, Olive bee-eater colonies, Pygmy Geese, flocks of Spurwing, White-Faced Ducks, Knob-nosed ducks, Open-bills all flourish on the 130 km of accessible waterways from Shackletons.

The African Skimmer abounds in this area. As the sun sets flocks of this graceful bird can be seen skimming the waters for their evening meal.
