The Upper Zambezi River
around Shackletons provides
a wide variety of bird habitats that include: sandy
river banks; reed beds, water lilies, low overhanging
vegetation, riverine forest, flooded grasslands, lakes,
vleis, and woodlands.

bird life around the Lodge or on a boat safari along
the riverbanks or on a mokorro into the channels of
the tranquil Upper Zambezi River.
African Skimmers in
flocks of hundreds, Carmine bee-eater, White Fronted
bee-eater, Olive bee-eater colonies, Pygmy Geese,
flocks of Spurwing, White-Faced Ducks, Knob-nosed
ducks, Open-bills all flourish on the 130 km of accessible
waterways from Shackletons.
The African Skimmer
abounds in this area. As the sun sets flocks of this
graceful bird can be seen skimming the waters for
their evening meal.
Nighttime brings the calls of the nocturnal species
such as the nightjars, owls and sandgrouse.
